LSU’s new spread offense is legit. The sixth ranked Tigers went into a hostile environment on Saturday night and left Texas with a 45-38 victory over the 9th ranked Longhorns. Quarterback Joe Burrow threw for 471 yards, the second highest total in school history, and three receivers had more than 100 yards in a single game for the first time in program history. Justin Jefferson had nine catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns.
“They been talking all week about DBU and all that extra stuff, we weren’t worried about all that we were worried about us” said Jefferson. “Coach Joe Brady said we were going to come out here and we are going to throw the ball, we were going to see what they were going to do when we throw the ball and that’s what we did and we had over 400 yards.”
LSU’s offense got off to a bit of a slow start, scoring just a field goal in the first quarter. But Burrow started to get in a rhythm in the second quarter and the Longhorns defense couldn’t stop him.
“In the first few games we’ve figured out we are a tempo team, we get in a rhythm we go fast,” said Burrow. “We were struggling earlier, we were trying to look back at the sideline, but Coach Steve (Ensminger) said screw it said we are going to go fast and make them line up to us and we got them on our heels and started playing a lot better.”
The Tigers offense had to keep scoring because the usually reliable Bayou Bengals defense couldn’t stop Sam Ehlinger and the Texas offense. Ehlinger threw for 401 yards and four touchdowns, even though he was sacked five times. Coach Ed Orgeron is not happy with how the defense played.
“We have to go back and look at what we did and evaluate what we can do better, there were people wide open, too many penalties, there was not enough rush, overall I don’t we were very good on defense, we couldn’t tackle well in space, we couldn’t stop em.”
LSU returns home this Saturday to host Northwestern State. After a physically exhausting game, Orgeron said he’s glad they are playing the Demons this Saturday.
