After performing one of the first heart transplants in the Gulf South 50 years ago, Ochsner Health System sets a milestone of completing its 1,000th heart transplant, joining 13 other prestigious healthcare systems in the country to accomplish the feat. Dr. Aditya Bansal lead physician of the historic transplant, says it’s been a team effort.
“Rich history, multidisciplinary team approach that actually can result in outstanding outcomes and I think that is what’s happening at Ochsner,” said Bansal.
Bansel says the patient is recovering well and he’s extremely pleased with the team’s performance.
Before a transplant operation even begins there are several phases involved in the overall process. Bansal says in order to have a successful outcome they have to find a proper match.
“When we talk about matching for the donor to the recipient, we are talking “ing about the age, we are talking about the size, the weight, and the blood group and so many other factors,” said Bansal.
When a patient has to undergo a transplant due to heart disease, it can be overwhelming. But Bansal says the heart transplant team at Ochsner has a long dedicated history in providing life-changing outcomes.
“This is a significant satisfaction that provides us in caring for these patients who really have no other options left,” said Bansal.
The late Dr. John Ochsner Sr. pioneered heart value and coronary bypass surgery. Completing 1,000 heart transplants is now another accolade Ochsner Health System can celebrate.
