LSU QB Joe Burrow is in the Heisman conversation after putting up 749 yards and nine touchdowns through two games. Burrow’s odds rose from 200 to 1 to five to one with some oddsmakers after dissecting Texas. USA Today Network LSU beat reporter Glenn Guilbeau, who also has a vote for the Heisman, says Burrow has a real shot.
“He is statistically up there in passing efficiency, he has the numbers, and the Texas game was seen by a lot of people.”
Burrow is also completing 82% of his passes.
Guilbeau says the star QBs for the number one and two ranked teams are still his favorites to win, but Burrow is right there in the second tier of candidates.
“Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa, they’re the favorites but Joe is going to be in the mix.”
Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa still has the best odds in Vegas at three to one, but Burrow is now tied with Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts at five to one.
LSU’s scheme puts Burrow front and center, much like it did for the team’s last Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette, but he’ll face the same make or break test.
“If you remember in 2015 Leonard Fournette was running away with the Heisman. I remember the USA Today votes, he had a commanding lead until they went into Tuscaloosa.”
Bama running back Derrick Henry would ultimately take home the trophy in 2015 after Leonard’s post-Crimson Tide tumble.
