The Department of Transportation and Capital Region Planning Commission are conducting a survey to get a better picture of the daily travel habits of motorists in the area. It’s the first study of it’s kind since the early 90s. Capital Region Planning Commission Executive Director Jamie Setze says thousands throughout five parishes should check their mailbox for an invite to take part.
“We want to get the best idea possible through this sample of how people are driving and about how people are going about their daily life activities so that as we model future conditions and future improvements, we have the best data possible,” said Setze.
Setze says responses can be submitted online, by telephone or through an app developed for the project.
“Let’s say you start from your house and you go to work. A few minutes after you get there, you’ll get a prompt, and you can wait until the end of the day to answer all of them, or you can take a few seconds, it takes less than a minute, to respond,” said Setze.
Participants can contribute to the study for one day or for a whole week. Setze says at the end of the day, the app will ask for more feedback.
“It kind of says, ‘Hey, did everything work right? And did anyone come to your house and deliver any packages?’ because you know thirty years ago we weren’t doing anywhere near the amount of home deliveries that we are doing today,” said Setze.
Louisiana has a $14 billion backlog of transportation needs and the survey will help to prioritize improvements.
