Number one LSU hopes to break an eight-game losing streak to number two Bama this Saturday in Tuscaloosa for what’s being dubbed the Game of the Century II. Tiger Rag assistant editor Tyler Nunez says Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban will have to contend with the best LSU offense he’s ever faced.
“The difference is drastic and obvious, this offense is high powered and they seem to be scoring at will and this is a huge advantage that the Tigers haven’t had,” said Nunez.
The first game of the Century resulted in a nine to six final score in favor of LSU in 2011. A lot more points are expected this Saturday. The Tigers are averaging 47 points a game, the Crimson Tide is averaging 49 points.
But Nunez says LSU’s defense is not as strong as in years past, so the game may come down to who has the ball last.
“This is a defense that has improved over the last few weeks, it still lags behind some of the LSU defenses of old,” said Nunez.
LSU’s scoring defense is 22nd in the nation at 20 points per game. Bama sits at 10th with 15 points per game.
Talent-wise Nunez says this LSU team isn’t particularly better than past teams that have fallen short of topping the Tide. The difference is they’re actually utilizing that talent effectively.
“It’s not like they didn’t have Justin Jefferson, Terrace Marshall, JaMarr Chase at wide receiver last year, all those guys were there, same with Clyde Edwards-Helaire at running back, they are just utilizing them in a way that’s more effective and they are scoring,” said Nunez.
