It’s the last week of the gubernatorial campaign. UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says both candidates need to focus on their core constituents. He says Republican challenger Eddie Rispone must appeal to his base of rural conservatives and Trump supporters.
“He also really needs to seal the deal with the Ralph Abraham voters, if he can get Abraham to run around the state and do joint appearances that would be really great,” said Cross.
Cross says Democratic Governor John Edwards will work to get African American voters to the polls.
“He really needs to focus on his ground game, there were a lot of potential Democratic voters who didn’t vote in the first round, he wants them to come out in the second round without a doubt,” said Cross.
Cross says while the candidates focus on voters this week, we can also expect political action committees to only sharpen their attack ads on a variety of topics.
“Regarding the economy, second-amendment rights, right-to-life, claims about state surpluses, claims about raising taxes, I think you are going to see everything ramped up to a fever pitch,” said Cross.
The run-off election is November 16th. Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM.
