It’s been nearly three decades since David Duke ran for Governor, but the former KKK leader’s legacy remains a point of contention, even in this year’s gubernatorial run-off.
GOP gubernatorial challenger Eddie Rispone called a recent radio ad linking him to David Duke “disgusting”, but Duke says like many Republicans, they now share many of the same policies.
“The New York Times ran a story in 2016, the big headline, David Duke’s policies and his program in Louisiana in the 1990s has become the program of the GOP,” says Duke.
Duke highlighted the similarities between his and Rispone’s immigration, welfare, and tax policy.
The former State Representative says Republican leaders shouldn’t be accused of racism, even though his 91’ gubernatorial platform has been adopted by the Republican Party at large.
“It doesn’t mean that Mr. Rispone, or Mr. Abrams (Congressman Abraham), or any Republican, or Mr. Trump is a racist or horrible person, and it doesn’t mean that I am a racist or horrible person,” says Duke.
The radio ad says Duke, President Trump and Rispone “don’t care about you or anyone who looks like you”. Duke says that’s racist.
“The ad is an example of the fact that the real racism today in America is anti-white racism,” says Duke.
