The cyberattack on state computer servers will keep Louisiana O-M-V offices closed for the rest of the week. Governor John Bel Edwards announced today the Office of Motor Vehicles will reopen on Monday.
“We are very confident that by working today, tomorrow, and through the weekend that we will be able to reopen on Monday for all of the individuals who need to transact business at the Office of Motor Vehicle,” said Edwards.
The ransomware attack on Monday impacted 132 servers in state government and the Office of Motor Vehicles has struggled to get its computer system to work properly.
“Most of what the public has seen is not a direct result of the ransomware attack, it’s a direct result of us being aggressive and shutting down the system so that the attack could not infiltrate more computers,” said Edwards.
Over the summer, several public school systems suffered a similar cyberattack and Edwards says more of them are coming, so the state will need to be prepared.
“It’s not just state-level entities that get hit. More often than not, it’s local entities and we are working very diligently with them as well so that they can improve their posture so that they can withstand these types of attacks,” said Edwards.
