Senator John Kennedy files the Clearing Broad Airwaves for New Deployment, or C-Band, Act in an effort to secure $10 billion for rural broadband infrastructure. Kennedy says there are many people that do not have reliable internet in less populated areas.
“We talk about 5G which is the new wireless technology that we’re trying to implement but some Louisianians don’t have any-G. Some Americans don’t have broadband,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy expects internet service providers to shell out between $40 and 50 billion in public auctions to get their piece of the airwaves in an effort to implement 5G technology.
“They can’t just go in a smoke-filled room and give it to telecommunication companies. They have to have a public auction so people can see what the bids are and feel like the American people are getting the best price,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy says 5G is faster and can handle more traffic. Kennedy adds it will improve lives.
“It’ll make driverless cars possible. Doctors can do surgery using robots over the internet, so if you don’t have a particular surgeon in your area, you can still have the surgery,” said Kennedy.
