LSU Athletics offered free slabs of sod from Tiger Stadium to fans yesterday. In total, roughly 3300 servings of grass were given away, causing traffic headaches around the pickup point at Alex Box Stadium. Clay from Prairieville says he’s got detailed plans on preserving the sod.
“I plan on building some timbers around it and having my own little Death Valley in the backyard and keeping it permanently and have it part of the family,” said the Prairieville man.
Cameron is a sophomore and says she and a friend had arrived hours early to claim their pieces of the field, only to watch the distribution descend into a chaotic scene.
“I just started running because I saw everyone else running and I grabbed two and by the time they got to him they said they had to cut it to two so he decided to take my two and we’re going to take one each and split it,” said the LSU sophomore.
Kelsey from Baton Rouge snagged some of the painted grass and says while having the keepsake turf may come off as silly, she prizes her new possession.
“It’s crazy. I didn’t expect this at all. We got purple, yellow, and white actually. It’s a piece of history so it’s not that silly,” said the Baton Rouge woman.
The sod was removed from the stadium as part of a months-long project to replace the field and improve drainage in the stadium.
