The House Judiciary Committee meets again this morning to review Articles of Impeachment drafted this weekend by Democrats.
Impeachment proceedings are beginning to move quickly, and Judiciary Committee member and Northwest Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson says we could see a resolution coming soon.
“The rumor is right now on the hill that we may be voting on Articles of Impeachment in Committee by the end of next week, and then on the floor by next week,” says Johnson.
The Articles are being drawn up in response to the President’s alleged effort to pressure Ukraine into investigating political rivals using Congressionally appropriated military aid.
Johnson says Republicans are being kept out of the loop on what to expect today, so no one is really sure how Democrats will approach crafting the articles.
“I honestly believe they are making this up as they go, so we will see what develops,” says Johnson.
Johnson, a Republican, says the new sense of urgency from Democrats leading the impeachment charge is thanks to a political clock that is starting to rapidly tick down.
“They put this, as someone said, one of the witnesses on the rocket docket for some reason. They believe they have to do this because there is an election year coming up,” says Johnson.
Several Democratic primary contenders are either Senators or Representatives, and a protracted impeachment process could pull them off the campaign trail.
