The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will stock 13 fishing sites around Louisiana this month with 4,400 pounds of rainbow trout. LDWF fisheries biologist Megan MacMenamin says it is all part of the “Get Out and Fish” program.
“The goal is to introduce this non-native species into some of these ponds, easily accessible close to home, places you can go fishing throughout the whole state of Louisiana,” said MacMenamin.
Rainbow trout are stocked only during the winter months when temperatures are cool. MacNemamin says these fish are fun to catch and delicious to eat.
She says by stocking the ponds, it increases an angler’s odds of catching a fish.
“That always makes it more fun, something you are going to be able to catch and keep and clean and take home and cook and all of that definitely adds more appeal,” said MacNmeanmin.
MacMenamin says the fish being stocked are adult rainbow trouts that are about one to two pounds in weight, but they could get much bigger.
