KingCakeSnob.com launches the fifth annual “Seal of Approval” ranking competition. Spokesperson Andrew Alexander says the biggest criteria when rating king cakes is presentation, flavor, freshness, and uniqueness.
“The king cakes that obviously taste the best and are the most visually appealing and have the best, richest flavor definitely rises to the top,” said Alexander.
The 2019 competition featured 633 different king cakes from more than 160 bakeries. Alexander says there isn’t necessarily a pattern that is followed when it comes to the voters’ rankings of king cake.
“Manny Randazzo’s has won multiple times, as has Caluda’s so it’s sort of all over the place in terms of whether its the dense ones or the airy ones. Every year there seems to be a bit of variety in the winners’ circle,” said Alexander.
Last year’s competition saw nearly 3,500 king cake reviews on the website. Alexander says the competition is an excuse to put the New Year’s health resolutions on hold for a bit.
“We’ve got people here on staff, we’ve got random people throughout Louisiana that are submitting their reviews about their favorite cakes and bakeries but it is a great time to maybe cheat on your New Year’s resolution a little bit and have a nice slice of king cake,” said Alexander.
The competition runs through February 18th.
