The LSU Tigers are national champs as they completed a 15-and-0 dream season with a 42-25 victory over the Clemson Tigers in the Superdome last night. Quarterback Joe Burrow had another spectacular game as he threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns. LSU’s offense started slow and found themselves down by 10 in the second quarter, but Burrow knew they would get it going.
“You can’t hold us down forever, I think we are too explosive, it just took us a while to get figured out,” said Burrow.
On defense, LSU forced a high-powered Clemson offense to punt nine times as the other Tigers were just 1 of 11 on third downs. Coach Ed Orgeron says the key was slowing down former Jennings running back Travis Etienne.
“I thought our guys did a tremendous job of not letting him run the football against us, we never panicked and those three-and-outs and those punts were critical in the ballgame,” said Orgeron.
LSU will go down as one of the best teams ever in the 150-year history of college football. They beat seven teams that were ranked in the top 10 when they played them. Burrow understands they accomplished something truly great.
“I mean this is special, this doesn’t come around every year, this is a special group of guys that really came together,” said Burrow.
It was Burrow’s final game in an LSU uniform. He finishes the season with 65 total touchdowns and 60 passing touchdowns. Both are NCAA records. Burrow goes down as a legend.
“I don’t know about the whole hero thing, but I know this national championship will be remembered for a long time, to do it in New Orleans is even more special,” said Burrow.
