Congressman Ralph Abraham will not seek a fourth term in office, citing a promise he made before being elected in 2014 that he would term limit himself.
Abraham made his three-term limit promise a core message of the campaign that saw him win the seat previously held by embattled GOP incumbent Vance McAllister.
“I’m a man that truly believes in civic duty and there are good arguments on both sides, but I just happen to fall on the side that thinks term limits are a good thing,” says Abraham.
Abraham’s narrowly topped a crowded GOP primary field and ultimately won 65 percent of the vote in the general against Monroe Mayor and Democrat Jamie Mayo.
The Congressman says the decision was not hard, and he’s proud of the votes he cast on behalf of Louisiana’s sprawling 5th district.
“Voting for our veterans, voting for our active men and women in uniform, voting for that big, big tax cut, promoting agriculture, selling rice to Iraq,” says Abraham.
Abraham isn’t completely ruling out future public service, and assuming the President were to win reelection, he would be interested in a position in his administration if offered.
“We should certainly look at it, this is a president who will go down in history as one of our better presidents in our entire history,” says Abraham.
