Last year an effort to legalize sports betting at Louisiana casinos failed, but the issue is set to come up again in the legislative session that begins March 9th. Metairie Senator Cameron Henry has filed a bill that would give voters an opportunity to decide if sports betting should be legal in their parish. If approved, the proposition will appear on the November 3rd ballot.
“Gaming issues have always been very contentious in the legislature for years past, I think this will give every member a better feel for what their constituents want and if they want it in their parish or not,” said Henry.
If voters approve sports betting than the legislature in 2021 would work to pass legislation on taxing and regulation.
“You take next step in going through who gets to do it, how much it gets taxed and other regulations and so forth,” said Henry.
