Guns and ammo sales are seeing a huge surge as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Owner of Meaux Guns in Baton Rouge Joe Meaux says the access to ammo is restricted as supply is struggling to keep up with demand at gun shops across the state.
“Our distributors are not able to ship in a timely manner because of the volume. Inventory has been pretty much sucked up across the country, so even our national distributors it is tough to get from,” said Meaux.
Meaux says he’s seeing more first-time gun owners making purchases as well as casual gun owners coming in and stocking up. Three categories of firearms are seeing the most demand.
“Small, concealable handguns and handguns for bedside use as well as the AR-style platform because it is so light, inexpensive, and easy and simple for even novice and small shooters to shoot,” said Meaux.
Meaux says background checks are also being slowed down by the surge.
“All firearms sold through any shop is going to go through a background check. Those background checks, the infrastructure on that is being taxed, so there is extended waits on those too,” said Meaux.
According to ammo.com, Louisiana’s increase in ammo sales is only being outpaced by Delaware and Oklahoma.
