Governor John Bel Edwards is calling on Louisiana residents to “mask up” which means wearing a face mask in public places. Edwards says wearing a mask reduces the chances of asymptomatic, or mildly symptomatic people unknowingly transmitting the virus to others.
“Think of wearing a mask in public as just being polite to others. It’s just like opening a door for them,” said Edwards.
Guidelines still call for anyone feeling sick to self-quarantine, even if they have a mask.
Edwards says if you don’t have a mask then you need to get one or make one ASAP.
“Everybody needs to start preparing and take the time that you have to make sure everyone in your family has a face covering,” said Edwards.
Edwards says while masks are recommended for the public, gloves are not. He says they can cause more harm than good.
“What we see with a lot of people who are unaccustomed to wearing gloves is if they start wearing gloves they stop washing their hands and they will stop washing the virus off of their gloves, but they are going to use those hands with those gloves on to touch their face,” said Edwards.
The Governor says the state is currently around day seven of a 14-day period of a measured decline in case growth he would need to see in order to partially reopen the economy on May 1st. Edwards has indicated that early next week he’ll announce what restrictions will be lifted when the current stay-at-home order expires on April 30th.
