The Sabine Parish town of Many will not actively enforce the Governor’s new proclamation according to Mayor Kenneth Freeman. Freeman feels the residents of Many are doing a good enough job keeping up with mitigation efforts voluntarily without law enforcement intervention.
“I’ve talked to the police department, unless there is some kind of official complaint, to not go out and look for problems,” said Freeman.
In a message to residents, Freeman says if someone needs to shelter at home, that is their choice and encourages that to continue. For those that resume life as normal, Freeman still advises them to continue to take spread mitigation efforts seriously.
Freeman believes citizens deserve the credit for Sabine Parish currently having only 29 COVID-19 cases and no fatalities on record.
“That’s because our people understand the risk and they are taking the measures to protect themselves and our community and I feel that they will continue to do so,” said Freeman.
Freeman says he is following the Governor’s lead in asking for voluntary participation, adding residents are aware of the risk of not following social distancing guidelines.
“If they do not and the disease gets worse, we will have to clamp down but I believe people are smart and I don’t believe they have to be forced into protecting themselves,” said Freeman.
The Governor has warned that today’s transition into phase one of reopening is not a return to precoronavirus life.
