Governor Edwards is expected to announce whether or not the state will move into Phase Three Monday afternoon.
Public Affairs Research Council President Robert Travis Scott says Edwards has a lot to consider given our new upward trajectory of case growth.
“We have seen the trend just since really in the last week to ten days just to creep back up, so I think this will have an impact on the Governor’s decision making,” says Scott.
A majority of the state’s public health regions are seeing a growth in new cases.
Scott says it’s likely state officials knew numbers would creep up once we moved into Phase Two, but they now have to contend with lowering levels of compliance on masks and social distancing.
“I think the public by and large went through a period of time where they were very cooperative and I think that people have really reached a point where they are relaxing,” says Scott.
Scott notes even with the recent spike over the past ten days we’re still nowhere close to overtopping our healthcare capacity.
We don’t’ know exactly what Phase Three will look like in Louisiana but Scott says federal guidelines indicate it would further loosen capacity restrictions and allow for larger crowds at events.
“What is really different about Phase Three is that some of that is large gatherings as well as places like bars who continue to be fairly restricted in Phase Two,” says Scott.
