Governor Edwards continues to stress the importance of wearing masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. While some parishes have put a mask mandate into place while in public, Edwards says he currently has no plans to make a similar statewide mandate.
“It is not currently recommended by the White House guidelines that you have mandates on masks from the state level, but rather you do it at the local level as the situations dictate,” said Edwards.
Edwards says government officials are stepping up enforcement of mask use and other mitigation efforts at businesses, but calls on the public to do their part in not going to those businesses.
“You know who are the best enforers out there? It’s the general public. If you refuse to go into a store that isn’t operating safely, that store is going to change. That restaurant will change. That business will do whatever is required,” said Edwards.
Edwards insists mask usage is vital to moving Louisiana forward and says if we don’t get off of the current trajectory, even more restrictions will have to be put into place.
“I want this to be crystal clear to everybody in the state of Louisiana. We are not going to threaten our ability to deliver healthcare, not just to COVID-19 patients, but to anybody in the state of Louisiana who needs to be treated in a hospital,” said Edwards.
