Hurricane Laura damage in Lake Charles August 31, 2020.
Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter says his city is going to need a lot of outside help if it’s going to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Laura.
Hunter is calling for people from across the nation to donate to causes aimed at helping the city and its people.
“This is a great American city that was dealt a very heavy blow. We don’t only need help from our Lake Charles brothers and sisters or our Louisiana brothers and sisters, we need help from our American brothers and sisters,” says Hunter.
He says most of all the city will need a tremendous amount of federal aid.
Early estimates say it could take four weeks for power to be restored to Lake Charles. Hunter feels even that is a bit optimistic.
“I would actually be happy if Entergy came out and said it would be four weeks,” says Hunter.
Hunter did note a silver lining to this tragedy: it appears the people of his city took the mandatory evacuation order very seriously.
“The fact that we had zero loss of life from the storm itself tells me that a lot of people did heed that warning to get out,” says Hunter.
