Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey Jr. is urging high school football families to call their local superintendents and tell them to demand the LHSAA allow players to begin contact practices September 11th.
Cathey Jr. says also asks you to ask them to support the scheduled October 8th season start date. He says it’s not just about the players.
“It’s about cheerleaders, it’s about the band, it’s about everybody who comes together on a Friday night. Especially when we talk about rural Louisiana, this is a community event,” said Cathey Jr.
Cathey Jr. says because the LHSAA is controlled by superintendents and principles local families can influence the football season decision.
LHSAA Executive Director Eddie Bonnie has said Louisiana needs to be in Phase 3 of its economic reopening for football games to be played, but the senator points to our neighbors who are already making it work.
“Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, every state around us played football last weekend there is no reason to think that we cannot start playing football in October,” said Cathey.
The LHSAA has expressed concern about facing possible liability for COVID infections should they resume play too early, but Cathey Jr. disagrees.
“The ball is completely in LHSAA’s court with regards to the policies that we are going to use in Louisiana,” says the Monroe Republican.
On Tuesday Attorney General Jeff Landry weighed in saying liability concerns were unfounded.
