Hurricane Delta is expected to make landfall tonight on the eastern side of Cameron Parish as a Category Two hurricane. State Climatologist Barry Keim says Delta will weaken once its eyewall reaches land, but hurricane-force winds are possible in central Louisiana.
“I think Alexandria is probably the upper limit for this thing to hang in there, I think it’s going to break down very quickly, but this is a very stout storm,” said Keim.
Keim says when Delta hits land it’s maximum wind speeds will be around 100 miles per hour.
“I think we are going to be looking at some pretty healthy hurricane damage across all of southwest Louisiana, probably up to Alexandria,” said Keim.
Keim says the National Hurricane Center forecast track has Delta as a tropical depression in northeast Louisiana on Saturday morning. He says by Saturday afternoon conditions will be better in south Louisiana.
“This is not one of those slow bob and weave kind of storms that sit around and pound the coast with wind and rain, this one is basically going to be in and out of here in what I consider a normal amount of time,” said Keim.
Forecasters estimate it will take 14 hours to move through Louisiana once the eye hits the coast.
