The parents of 31-year old Trayford Pellerin, the black man who was shot by police on August 21st, are suing Lafayette Police for damages related to his death. Also named in the suit is Lafayette Consolidated Government and 10 police officers. Family attorney Ronald Haley says they want justice and change.
“What we’re hoping to do is to affect policy change within the Lafayette Police Department and hopefully by example other law enforcement agencies across the state. As far as criminal charges that is up to State Police, they are still conducting their investigation,” says Haley.
Haley says the lawsuit is the first step the Pellerin family has taken to get answers.
“One of the big questions that has not been answered is whether or not Trayford had in his physical possession a knife at the time he was shot. We don’t know that answer yet,” says Haley.
Pellerin was fatally shot by police who responded to a disturbance involving a man with a knife at north Lafayette gas station that night. Pellerin was in the parking lot and after a taser was used, he walked away.
Family attorney Chase Trichell says the family is not being properly informed about what happened the day Pellerin was fatally shot.
“There are some 40 police camera videos, between dash cams and body cams, there are 40 something videos. The family saw one video. The notion that they’ve been informed is simply not true, says Trichell.
