Two Republicans are prepping for a month-long sprint to the finish line in the 5th Congressional District runoff, a seat that came open earlier this year after Congressman Ralph Abraham retired.
Abraham’s former chief of staff Luke Letlow is the early favorite due to his fundraising prowess. He said he’s going to keep barnstorming across the northeast, Cenla, and Florida Parishes.
“I am going to go everywhere just like I have done. You see in the Florida Parishes I did very well, St. Landry, Opelousas, I will continue to get everywhere and anywhere I can continue to be with two or more people,” said Letlow.
Letlow, who secured 33 percent of the vote Tuesday, laid out his priorities should he be sent to Congress.
“We have got to have investments just like in the Eisenhower Administration with the interstates. We need our communities connected to rural broadband,” said Letlow.
Alexandria State Representative Lance Harris will be a formidable challenger. He said voters will connect with his life experience as a business owner and state Republican leader.
“I think when you look at the two candidates and compare the race everyone will say I want a guy that really has been through things and can really understand what I have to go through when people make laws and he has the common sense to make sure it is right,” said Harris.
Harris nabbed 16.6 percent of the vote, just 456 more votes than the third-place candidate and Democrat Sandra Christophe.
Harris served as the State House Republican Majority Caucus Chair and said while he and Letlow may share similar conservative views he’s the candidate with the record of getting them into law.
“He may have the same ideological ideas but I have had to take arrows and actually taken hits for it because I have stood up for it,” said Harris.
