Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter is talking turkey after his city was struck with two hurricanes this year. Hunter’s issued a “Turkey Challenge” in hopes of raising funds to give away the holiday bird to those in his city that are struggling from hurricane recovery and bring some cheer.
“We’re trying to kind of put a fun spin on it with Thanksgiving and giving away turkeys, but there’s a lot of other needs out there, believe me, if it’s not turkeys there are a hundred other things that people need,” said Hunter.
Initially, Hunter asked local businesses to donate 20 frozen turkeys or $500 towards the fundraiser to the United Way of Southwest Louisiana but now the challenge has taken flight.
“Certainly to have the challenge extended beyond our borders is wonderful, and to know that people outside of Lake Charles are remembering us and remembering our citizens especially during the holidays it really means a lot,” said Hunter.
Hunter was inspired after a trip to the grocery store to buy his own turkey and it cost $25. He realized that many in his community are not as fortunate this year with job losses from COVID and two hurricanes.
“But especially with what we’ve been thru in Southwest Louisiana with two hurricanes, we need a moment in time where we’re encouraging families to gather together and just have a moment of thanks,” said Hunter.
To donate you can visit United Way of Southwest Louisiana or text the word TURKEY to 40403, that’s 40403.
