A poll is out showing there would be a tight race for the 2nd Congressional District should Congressman Cedric Richmond leave his seat to join the Biden administration.
LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says it’s only a matter of time before we find out what job Richmond, a close ally of President-elect Biden, works next.
“At what level, maybe a senior advisor level, is unknown right now,” said Alford. “There sure seems to be a lot of people who are certain that that move is coming,” said Alford.
The 2nd District is the state’s majority-minority district and is mostly New Orleans, but also includes north Baton Rouge.
Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu leads in the poll with 25 percent, followed by City Councilwoman Helena Moreno at 18 percent, and State Senators Troy Carter at 15 percent, Cleo Fields at 14 percent, and Karen Carter Peterson at four percent.
“There is a kind of a field starting to develop that is more rumors than anything. I don’t think anyone wants to tip their hat too soon,” said Alford.
The poll of 500 residents was conducted in early November by President-elect Joe Biden’s chief pollster John Anzalone.
Landrieu is far out ahead of the pack, scoring 25 percent support in the poll but should he not run Moreno and Carter would be nearly tied for the lead. LaPlace State Representative Randal Gaines is reportedly also being encouraged to join any potential race for the seat.
Alford said should the highly coveted seat come open he expects things will get down and dirty pretty quickly.
“This seat in New Orleans doesn’t become truly open all that often and when it is filled it has traditionally produced politicians that can arrive in D.C. and hit the ground running and really climb the ladder,” said Alford.
