The state transportation department has created visual displays of trash they’ve collected from roadways as a reminder to Keep Louisiana beautiful. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallet said they’ve placed in all regions six-foot-tall 3-D letters that spell out D-O-T-D and they are filled with trash.
“Not only does it look terrible, and it’s not very sightly and it doesn’t portray the state in a great image, but also we spend more than $9-million annually a year,” said Mallett.
Mallett says the first sculpture was placed in-front of DOTD headquarters and was an original concept of Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson. Mallett says the original display received attention from lawmakers and sparked the idea to create more.
“He wanted a nice visual and we have people on staff who can build these types of bins and they just put them together here,” said Mallett.
Mallett said the $9-million annual cost of trash collection could be used more efficiently towards other projects, for example, 90 miles of roadway overlay, and they could focus more on things like…
“Ditch cleaning, drainage work, so you know it’s taking away from essential needs of our infrastructure.”
