The first Amazon fulfillment center in Louisiana will be in Lafayette Parish, the online giant will construct the center in Carencro. Gregg Gothreaux, CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority said it’s a big boost for the area and not only because they’ll be hiring 500 employees.
“They’re also going to buy a lot of gasoline, a lot of plate lunches, and you know it it’s going to be a great impact. Probably $60-75 million dollars a year,” said Gothreaux.
Construction of the fulfillment center is expected to complete by the end of 2021 and Gothreaux said hiring will begin three months prior to opening.
“Starting wage is $15 an hour, plus full medical, dental, eye care, etc.,” said Gothreaux.
The fulfillment center will be located on the former Evangeline Downs site in Carencro, Gothreaux explains why that location was chosen.
“You’ve got two north-south exits on I-49. You’ve got Interstate 10. It’s one of those special corners of the United States where you can get anywhere in the south,” said Gothreaux.
Gothreaux said FastStart and the Lafayette Economic Development Authority will hold job fairs in the spring and summer to hire local employees.
Amazon has seven Whole Foods Markets in the state and delivery stations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
