Eighteen schools made it to the Prep Football Classic but no team endured more than the Grand Lake Hornets. The small school in Cameron had two devastating hurricanes make landfall in their parish, but yet they persevered and will play in Monday’s Class One-A Championship game.
“So we all had nothing, so we all had to bond together and say hey we just want to play football and then that took the light of hey let’s just try to win us a game,” said Grand Lake head football coach Jeff Wainwright.
Grand Lake is 8-and-1 heading into Monday’s One-A title game versus top-seeded and defending champion Oak Grove. Wainwright says the team has been an inspiration and an escape for Cameron Parish residents.
“Friday nights when those boys play there’s no talk about the hurricanes or the pandemic, it’s third down and seven, go get them defense or it’s fourth and one and they are cheering go,” said Wainwright.
This is Grand Lake’s first appearance in a state championship football game. Wainwright told the players to enjoy the moment and don’t worry about the score.
“Someone wants to play a game, let’s go play,” said Wainwright. “That’s the most fun thing you are ever going to do in your life is play a football game and make those memories.”
Cox Sports Television is televising the games, but they will be taped delay. To see them live log on to the nfhsnetwork.com. You will have to pay a monthly subscription.
