Congressman Mike Johnson and Senator Bill Cassidy recounted a harrowing day on Capitol Hill yesterday as a pro-Trump mob tore through the halls of Congress as lawmakers debated the certification of the Presidential Election results.
Johnson said the incident was shocking. He was in the Lower Chamber as the mob smashed through police barricades on the Hill.
“Chaos ensued and Capitol Police began to barricade us into the House Chamber, which was a jarring event. Then they ultimately had us don gas masks, evacuate the building, and sent us to a secure location,” said Johnson.
After Johnson and other Representatives were moved out of the Chamber there was a tense standoff at the door as guards drew guns on rioters as they attacked the door.
Johnson said Wednesday was a sad day for the US.
“We can’t see one and other as enemies, we have to see each other as fellow Americans, all part of one big family. We have to get together or else this Republic is going to be in peril,” said Johnson.
Cassidy was in the Upper Chamber at the time. He said there was a commotion as the mob descended on the Senate Chambers.
“All of a sudden Mitt Romney walked very quickly behind me and said something and looked up and I noticed Pence was gone and somebody said protestors had breached the Capitol,” said Cassidy.
Senators were then escorted to a safe location. Afterward, the mob broke into the Upper Chamber.
Cassidy condemned the attack on the Capitol in strong terms and called for a peaceful transition of power into the Biden Administration.
“It has crossed the line. It is what happens in third world countries. It is disrupting a constitutional process. It is not to be tolerated and whoever is caught and arrested should be prosecuted for sedition,” said Cassidy.
All other members of the Louisiana Congressional Delegation have also issued statements denouncing the attack on Capitol Hill.
