With less than two weeks to go in the Trump presidency and the country still reeling from Wednesday’s chaotic day at the US capitol, Baton Rouge Republican Congressman Garret Graves tells WWL Radio in New Orleans that President Donald Trump should effectively resign.
“What I mean by that, is that effectively he will not be out there talking, speaking, wielding the full authority and power of the White House, maybe technically finding a way to hold over the keys to (Vice-President Mike) Pence,” said Graves.
Graves says invoking the 25th Amendment to forcibly remove the president or impeaching him would only ramp up the decisiveness. The U-S Representative from Baton Rouge says Mr. Trump has a powerful voice and needs to take a step back as the country recovers from a dark day in its history.
“What leaders do in times like this is that they lead, not further into the intensity but out to place that is better,” said Graves.
President Trump said on Friday he will not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration on December 20th. Graves says President Trump attending would only be a negative.
“I don’t think that the reason he did that was because he wanted to poke Joe Biden in the eye, I think he did it because he recognized that was not going to be helpful in terms of healing our nation,” said Graves.
