As political fallout continues from the storming of the Capitol last week, the question arises can your employer fire you for your political beliefs? Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino said in Louisiana the answer is yes, they can.
“Private employers can fire their employees at-will for no cause, or any cause as long as it’s not a lawfully prohibited reason such as race, etc. your employers can fire you,” said Ciolino.
Ciolino said it’s not necessarily a matter of if you committed criminal activity at a political demonstration.
“But Louisiana is a very, very pro-employer, very much an at-will state so in Louisiana you could be fired for engaging in non-violent political activity,” said Ciolino.
Ciolino said a private employer in the Bayou State could choose to fire you if you attended a rally to support any political agenda.
“Whatever the political issue of the day is you’re certainly within your bounds if you’re an employer to fire someone,” said Ciolino.
Ciolino said California is one of the few states where an employer cannot terminate you for engaging in political activities.
