The Louisiana Department of Insurance has received 691 formal complaints about home insurance companies related to issues stemming from Hurricanes Laura, Delta, and Zeta.
Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said the majority of those complaints are related to companies’ failure to communicate with policyholders.
“There are adjusters not returning phone calls, slow payment of claims that resulted in a complaint being filed, and more of them have been resolved,” said Donelon who says 597 of those complaints have been closed as of January 11th.
If you’re having a problem with your insurance company or agent Donelon said you can reach out to his department for assistance.
“We offer an opportunity to file a formal complaint against your insurers or your adjuster, they are licensed by us, or your insurance agent for that matter,” said Donelon.
A non-formal complaint option is also available. Donelon said his department received several hundred of those related to the hurricanes.
Smaller insurers have a higher rate of complaints filed against them per policyholder than bigger insurers. Donelon said when it comes to responsiveness bigger companies may have some advantages.
“The smaller companies, not as much staff as available as a State Farm or an Allstate, that may contribute,” said Donelon.
Of the major insurers, Liberty Mutual had the lowest complaint rate, while State Farm had the highest.
