Former LSU running back Leonard Fournette has gone from being cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars to one win away from being a Super Bowl champion. Fournette has helped the Buccaneers reach Super Bowl 55. He was picked up by Tampa Bay after the Jaguars released him in August.
“I was like crying for like 30 minutes a couple of minutes ago, I was on the phone with mom and dad and it was about my journey, first from Jacksonville, from me going to jail, from me getting cut and I think it’s a wonderful story on how it’s playing out,” said Fournette.
Fournette had a rocky three-year run in Jacksonville that included injuries, a one-game suspension and getting arrested in 2019 for driving on a suspended driver’s license. When the rest of his Tampa Bay teammates were celebrating the NFC Championship win over Green Bay, Fournette says he called his mom and dad.
“They understand me and they know how much I love football, when things were not going my way, my mom kept telling me that God is going to make a way for you and that way ended up being the playoffs,” said Fournette.
Fournette has been instrumental for the Bucs in the playoffs and had a spectacular 20-yard touchdown run in Sunday’s victory over Green Bay. The New Orleans native is appreciative of the opportunity he’s had.
“I’m just thankful for my journey. this lesson, whatever the case maybe, whatever was out there on my name, hopefully it has changed.” said Fournette.
