Temperatures in Louisiana will begin plummeting Friday and over the weekend as a polar vortex makes its way south out of Canada.
State Climatologist Barry Keim said that vortex will begin dropping the average statewide temperature every day through Tuesday.
“Tuesday of next week temperatures are going to drop all the way into the teens in northern parts of Louisiana, it will be in the 20s across central parts of Louisiana, and in the 30s near the coastline,” said Keim.
Keim said because of this we could see some snow in parts of the state Sunday night and Monday night.
“As that cold air begins to settle in it looks like it will be cold enough to produce a wintery mix of precipitation including freezing rain, sleet, and snow across the northern half of the state,” said Keim who adds temperatures are expected to remain low late into next week which could produce even more wintery mix.
This comes during the usually busy Mardi Gras weekend. Keim said maybe it’s for the best the parades aren’t rolling.
“This would have been miserable weather for Mardi Gras, certainly chilly weather and this weekend’s parades and everything, things going on right now would have been a disaster,” said Keim.
