Teachers and school staff will be among those eligible to be vaccinated for COVID beginning Monday. Governor Edwards made the announcement Thursday allowing an additional 166,000 K-12 employees to be prioritized.
Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley said it’s vital to increase face-to-face instruction.
“It’s the right decision and it will not only recognize the status of early childcare centers and PreK-12 as essential workers but also help us keep our centers and schools open,” said Brumley.
Brumley said currently 67-percent of public-school students attend in-person instruction.
As to how teachers and staff will be vaccinated, Brumley that’s based on each school system.
“That’s going to be a system-to-system decision along with their medical partners about whether that will happen at the school site versus at the clinics and pharmacies and hospitals,” said Brumley.
Brumley said while he is thankful that teachers and school employees will soon be eligible to be vaccinated the Department of Education will not push nor incentivize employees to do so.
Each individual school system will handle how employees will be inoculated and Brumley said around half of employees have indicated they wish to be vaccinated.
“As I’ve talked to a few systems across the state and leadership in those systems it seems like somewhere around you know half of the employees throughout the state have indicated an interest,” said Brumley.
