To assist the citizens of Shreveport as the city enters a second week with a collapsed water system Speaker of the House Clay Schexnayder along with other lawmakers helped collect 150-thousand bottles of water.
“And Representative Bishop my Chairman of Ways and Means, we decided to start putting together some water that we could get to these guys and the community of Shreveport to be able to help them with their water issues,” said Schexnayder.
Two powerful winter storms paralyzed the city’s water system leaving 200-thousand citizens stranded. Schexnayder said the need allowed members of the legislature to lend a helping hand.
“And all of the House of Representatives that we have reached out to have done a great job at coming together in a time of need to be able to help some of our own and that’s what it’s all about,” said Schexnayder.
Mayor of Shreveport Adrian Perkins stated the aging infrastructure of the water system, like others in the state, was not able to match Mother Nature last week. Schexnayder said this an issue the legislature will need to address to avoid similar situations in the future.
“Look at each one that we can, and make sure that the municipalities in the small towns and in the parishes that have water systems to start evaluating where they are with their water systems,” said Schexnayder.
Shreveport is expected to lift its boil advisory on Friday.
