Louisiana has expanded COVID vaccine eligibility to anyone 16 years and older with certain health conditions, including asthma, hypertension, diabetes, smokers, and people who are overweight. Edwards says the list of health conditions for eligibility can be found on the state department of health’s website.
“Only the people who have these conditions are in this age range actually avail themselves of the vaccine otherwise they will be depriving someone who is at greater risk to having severe complication or severe case of COVID-19 from having access to the vaccine,” said Edwards.
Edwards says this another important step in the state’s fight against COVID-19 as he hopes getting more of the population vaccinated will reduce serious illness and death from the virus.
“And that is why we are working with individuals with the co-morbid health conditions that predispose them to a poor outcome should they contract the virus,” said Edwards.
Edwards is encouraging everyone who is eligible for the vaccine to get the vaccine. He says nearly 10-percent of the state’s population have been fully vaccinated and very few people have reported serious side effects.
“Less than a handful of individuals have had to spend one night in the hopsital because of a reaction, so these are safe, they are effective, this is how we are going to get through this pandemic,” said Edwards
