Despite nearly winning the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, LSU is an eight-seed in the NCAA Tourney and will play 16-and-4 St. Bonaventure on Saturday. Coach Will Wade says it will be a challenge to beat the Bonnies who won both the Atlantic Ten regular season and conference titles.
“I’ve actually watched St. Bonaventure play a couple of times this year, they got a top 40 offense, a top 20 defense, they are 17th in the country in defensive proficiency, they got some good guard play, they got a great shot-blocker a big six-ten guy down there, a good small-ball four,” said Wade.
St. Bonaventure has five players who score in double figures led by Junior Guard Kyle Lofton, who is averaging 14 points and six assists a game.
LSU gets an invite to the Big Dance after compiling an 18-9 record. They’ve won four of their last five and lost by one point to sixth-ranked Alabama in the SEC Tournament Championship game. Wade says the lack of a quality non-conference win hurt them in the seeding and what they did past weekend didn’t help.
“I’ve said this the conference tournaments don’t matter that thing was done, our seed was probably set on Friday night,” said Wade. “We are in the deal and that’s the number one thing and we have to get ready for Bonaventure.”
LSU played Sunday in Nashville and will bus today to Indiana where the entire NCAA Tournament will be held. There will be extensive COVID testing protocols and the team will stay in a hotel room the next couple of days.”
If the Tigers beat that Bonnies they’ll likely play top-seeded Michigan on Monday.
