126 Louisianans have tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated, good for only about .02 percent of all Louisianans who are fully vaccinated.
State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter said for those few people who got the bug, they didn’t get it bad, and none of them had to be hospitalized.
“Almost half of the cases were asymptomatic, which means that they were discovered through routine testing like the kind that is happening in long-term care facilities,” said Kanter.
Full vaccination is two weeks after you complete your vaccine series. 834,000 Louisianans have completed their vaccine series.
Kanter said no vaccine is 100 percent effective 100 percent of the time, but these results show “extraordinary” levels of effectiveness.
“The vaccines that we have for COVID are extraordinarily effective, I mean upwards of 95 percent, but that is still not 100 percent so you still expect some breakthrough cases,” said Kanter.
A recent CDC “real world” study showed Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were 90 percent effective two weeks after their second doses.
Kanter said this is just further proof of the incredible effectiveness of vaccines, and a message that should be shared with those still on the fence.
“The ask right now to people who have already been vaccinated is number one, thank you, and number two please go talk to your friends, family, and coworkers, tell them about your experience, and encourage them to be vaccinated as well,” said Kanter.
1.3 million Louisianans have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine.
