Koy Moore, LSU Freshman Wide Receiver
Baton Rouge Police released body camera footage showing an encounter last year between officers and LSU receiver Koy Moore that led to Moore filing a complaint against the officers alleging that he was violated.
The incident took place on November 8th around 2 AM. Police said they were responding to noise complaints related to a roughly 200 person party that was happening on the top deck of a parking garage.
The footage shows Moore and Alabama receiver Traeshon Holden hiding behind a truck as police arrived to break up the late-night party. Moore told police that he and his friend were hiding behind the vehicle because they heard sirens and saw people running and did not know what was happening.
Moore and Holden are then approached by an officer who tells them to put their hands on the truck and within seconds of issuing the order pulls out his gun and points it at them. BRPD Chief Murphy Paul said the entire incident lasted just under three minutes.
“My hope is that over the next few days as this video surfaces in news and social media that this incident will foster uncomfortable conversations but also meaningful dialog,” said Paul.
The two officers then pat down Moore and Holden, search the area for contraband, find none, and allow the two to leave.
Audio from the body camera shows Moore telling an officer that he was scared and upset that a gun was pulled on him and he was pat searched while he wasn’t doing anything wrong. Paul confirmed the two did nothing wrong, but also said the two officers were responding to their training.
“We understand emotions, we understand past pain and generational scars. We understand that and we also understand that it was a traumatic emotional event for these two men to go through that,” said Paul. “We encourage complaints, we want to know what is going on in the community, and at the same time I ask you please don’t be critical of our police officers either, give them a chance to grow from this experience.”
There’s audio of an officer explaining to Moore that hiding behind a vehicle looked suspicious and he feared for his life. Paul said the officers’ intent was not malicious, but both were given letters of reprimand and ordered to undergo more training. The officers were cleared of wrongdoing at a March 10th disciplinary hearing.
