Governor Edwards announces a $30-million buyout program for a Calcasieu Parish neighborhood that has flooded on multiple occasions. Police Jury President Brian Abshire said the funds will be used to purchase homes at fair market value in the Greinwich Terrance neighborhood of Lake Charles.
“The neighborhood itself has experienced flooding on three separate occasions, disastrous flood, back in Hurricane Harvey, again with Hurricane Delta and then now this past week with the record flood,” said Abshire.
The buyout program is completely optional and Abshire said while he understands relocating and leaving your home is extremely emotional…
“At the same time, how many times can you emotionally go through the devastation of flooding and having to gut and repair your home,” said Abshire.
Abshire said many of these residents were in the midst of renovating their homes from the hurricane and were impacted again by flooding Monday.
Homeowners will be approached about the buyout program there is no need to register. Abshire said once the majority of the neighborhood is purchased it will be turned into a green space.
“Hopefully, some retentions ponds and things like that, that can prevent flooding in the future,” said Abshire.
The 50-year-old neighborhood has approximately 300 homes.
