Parents in Louisiana can enroll their children in free 20-day-long virtual math courses that apply as credit toward their high school transcripts. Senior VP at K-12 Stride Darren Reed said two out of three parents are looking for summer learning opportunities and Stride offers 20-day Algebra one, two, and Geometry classes.
“And we also find that these courses are traditionally the ones where there’s a greater need and we see that during the pandemic probably the area where a student may have suffered the most,” Reed said.
Each class lasts four hours per day and the 20-day cohorts begin today, June 23rd, and July 7th. Reed said Stride offers other opportunities for students including free summer camps.
“There’s a lot of opportunities for math enrichment camps, we have an e-sports and coding camp, this will be our third annual job shadow week, nursing exploration camps, etc etc…” Reed said.
Keeping the classes online allows for the courses to be widely accessible for students. Reed said the courses and camps help connect students with industry experts.
“And what find is that if students understand early what their passion and interests are and can see jobs and careers related to that, they’re more likely to see their end goal, if you will, in terms of completing high school,” Reed said.
