It is an ideal weekend to go fishing and it’s also the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Free Fishing Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. LDWF spokesperson Gabe Giffin said the annual event is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to cast a line with family and friends.
“The weather is great to get out and go fishing and we want to give people one less thing to worry about this weekend, so you go, and you fish and you do not need your fishing license,” said Giffin.
Another reason the annual Free Fishing Weekend is held in June is that fishing licenses in the state run yearly beginning in June. Giffin said the free weekend gives anglers a grace period and serves as a reminder to renew.
“If you were to buy a fishing license right now it will run until the summer June of 2022, so it’s important that people understand that a lot of their fishing licenses from last year are expiring this month,” said Giffin.
The free weekend includes both fresh and saltwater fishing. Giffin said it’s also the perfect weekend to introduce the sport to someone who’s never been before and possibly recruit a new fishing buddy.
“Just take a young person or take a friend, someone who yearns to get in the outdoors and give them an opportunity maybe they don’t get every day,” said Giffin.
Outside of this weekend, anyone 16 or older must possess a Louisiana fishing license when fishing in any public waters in the state.
