The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in the 1977 cold-case murder of a Golden Meadow woman who was found shot in the back in a restaurant. 78-year-old Chester Vegas of Cut Off is charged with 2nd Degree Murder and left the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex Friday night after posting bail.
LPSD spokesperson Brennan Matherne said on October 10th 1977 Deputies found 32-year-old Dianne Vegas on the floor of the Chicken House restaurant. They now believe her husband murdered her.
“Initially her husband at the time, Chester Vegas, was considered a suspect in the case but that investigation ultimately went cold,” said Matherne.
Matherne said it’s good for the family to get some closure on this murder even if it meant waiting more than four decades.
“We reopened the investigation some 44 years later in October of 2020 and obtained new information that ultimately led us to obtain probable cause and an arrest warrant,” said Matherne. “To make an arrest 44 years after an initial case some would be critical of it in how long it took but certainly our investigation is only as good as our evidence and the eye witness accounts that we have.”
