It’s Tax Day for most of the state, and that includes both state and federal taxes that are due for 2020. But Senior Tax Manager at Hannis T. Bourgeois in Baton Rouge, Brad Tate said there are a few parishes that received yet another extension.
“But the floods that happened in May, Ascension, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, and Lafayette Parishes all got an additional extension to August 16th,”
The entire state, along with Texas and Oklahoma, already received an extension from May 17th until June 15th due to winter storms in February.
For taxpayers who do have to file today, Tate said to be sure you have accurately recorded what you received from your employer, investments, etc., and if your salary decreased in 2020 compared to 2019…
“So, make sure that they include the decrease in income because they might qualify for additional amounts from stimulus payments that people received last year,” said Tate.
Tate said stimulus funds that taxpayers did receive in 2020 is not counted as income for the year so you do not have to claim it.
“And additionally, if anyone had unemployment compensation, the first $10,000 of that is exempt for most taxpayers in 2020,” said Tate.
