If you’re planning a summer trip you might want to hurry up and finalize those plans. According to AAA, more people are expected to take a vacation this summer compared to 2019. AAA spokesperson Don Redman said comparing rates for 2020 is pointless considering the pandemic and travelers are anxious to make an excursion.
“The vast majority of people who are going to be traveling this summer are traveling by car, but you’re also seeing more peopling venturing towards airlines as well. And the expectation is that this fall you’ll see a large uptick in cruises,” said Redman.
AAA measures travel interest by the number of vacation map requests their TripTik receives, and requests grew by 10 times from 2019 to 2021. AAA says more than three-quarters of Americans say they are ready to take a trip.
Redman said the majority of summer travelers will remain stateside because of uncertain restrictions overseas, but excursions to Mexico and the Caribbean are also on the rise. Two other popular destinations are Hawaii and Alaska.
“People are thinking if I travel to Alaska and Hawaii, it doesn’t feel like you’re just in the continental U-S that you’re doing something exotic,” said Redman.
Redman advises travelers to plan thoroughly and pack accordingly which includes face masks and sanitizer as some attractions might still require face coverings. Also, have your car battery checked before you take to the roads to avoid any delays.
“Cause that’s one of the top three main calls we get for roadside assistance is a dead battery, and heat will absolutely kill your battery,” said Redman.
National Parks is another popular destination, which requires advance registration, so don’t expect to be admitted without a reservation. Redman said due to a shortage of rental cars consider taking your own vehicle or alternative transportation like tour buses.
