A 30-year New Orleans Police veteran and a 17-year-old Hammond High student were the first two winners in the state’s vaccine incentive lottery program. 80-year-old New Orleanian Clement Dasalla won $100,000 and Skyla Degrasse scored $100,000 in scholarship money that will be paid into a START account.
Governor Edwards made the announcement at a Friday press conference. He says the two are really double winners.
“I want to congratulate them not just on winning, which was a matter of chance, but for making the decision to get vaccinated,” said Edwards.
Degrasse told the Advocate newspaper that she plans on attending medical school.
The deadline to register for next week’s drawing is tonight at 11:59 PM. Those who’ve had at least one shot of a COVID vaccine can register here. Winners will be announced every Friday through the end of the month with a grand prize million dollar drawing in August.
